Nancy Friend Allan died unexpectedly on May 27, 2004 at her winter residence in Tyler, Texas. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 5th at 1:0 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel with visitation starting at noon. Nancy was born on September 26, 1925 in West Virginia to parents, Floyd E. and Lura Friend. Upon completing high school early, she attended Marshall College for one year. Orphaned at age eighteen, her resilient and self-reliant nature led her to take a job with the federal government in Washington, D.C. There she met and married Willard "Bill" Allan, a member of the O.S.S. on July 29, 1945. Following the end of WWII, Bill attended Harvard University. After graduation, he was commissioned in the Foreign Service. Nancy accompanied Bill in his numerous posts around the world including Bulgaria, Greece, and Germany. As the spouse of a diplomat, she fulfilled a vital role, coordinating various social and political functions, while being a dedicated wife and mother. After leaving the Foreign Service, the Allans continued working overseas, with postings in Saudia Arabia and Iran. Upon returning to the United States, Nancy and Bill lived in various locations before settling in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, two decades ago. Following Bill's death in August of 2000, Nancy devoted herself to her beautiful yard, dear friends and family and Susie, her feline companion. Nancy was an avid gardener and lifelong tennis player, as well as a member of the Central Michigan Community Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, playing bridge, and doing crossword puzzles, but saved her greatest affection for Golden Retrievers and cats. She remained active and independent until her death. She will be missed by her two sons, Leigh (Kathy) Allan of Dayton, OH and Christian (Melanie) Allan of Mt. Pleasant; and her grandchildren, Geof, Leslie, Kristen and Will; as well as many close friends in Texas and Michigan
